The Marlins and 1B Jorge Cantu avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $6 million contract.
Cantu, who turns 28 in late January, batted .289/.345/.443 last season with 16 home runs and 100 RBI. He landed a well-deserved raise from the $3.5 million salary that he earned in 2009. And with Nick Johnson out of the picture, he should see even more time as the club's first baseman in 2010.

 Jorge Cantu-1B - Marlins Jan. 7 - 9:35 am et

The Marlins have no intention of trading Jorge Cantu in an effort to save money, reports Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
This squashes a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the Fish may "start taking calls" on Cantu if they can't find a taker for Dan Uggla. Cantu, who turns 28 later this month, earned $3.5 million last season and figures to take home nearly $5 million in arbitration this winter.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports the Marlins are not making infielder Jorge Cantu available via trade.
The Rangers expressed a strong desire to trade for Cantu on Tuesday, but a deal won't be happening. The Fish may use him as their starting first baseman in 2010 and were impressed with the numbers he posted this past season. Cantu, 27, batted .289/.345/.443 with 16 home runs and 100 RBI.

 Jorge Cantu-1B - Marlins Dec. 8 - 10:28 pm et

The Rangers are exhibiting strong interest in Marlins infielder Jorge Cantu, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
The Rangers are in the market for a first-baseman and designated hitter. Cantu would fit that bill and has the ability to fill in at third base as needed. Morosi suggests pitcher Brandon McCarthy as a trade target for Florida, but the Marlins would almost certainly want more. In November, we heard Cantu is "almost 100 percent" certain to remain with the Marlins through the winter.

 Jorge Cantu-1B - Marlins Nov. 23 - 12:41 pm et

MLB.com has learned that it is almost "100 percent" certain that Jorge Cantu will not be traded.
The Marlins are willing to listen to offers for possible non-tender candidates, but they reportedly seem comfortable with the roughly $5 million Cantu will make next season. Cantu, 27, batted .289/.345/.443 with 16 home runs and 100 RBI in 2009. If he stays in Florida, Cantu will either play first base or third base. Prospects Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez are expected to compete for the first base job during spring training.

 Hanley Ramirez-SS - Marlins Oct. 4 - 1:05 pm et

Hanley Ramirez is not in the lineup for Sunday's regular season finale.
Ramirez left Saturday's game with a bruised knee. He finishes the season with a .342 mark, which should give him the NL batting title. Jorge Cantu is also out Sunday, and in a walking boot, after spraining his right ankle during Saturday's game.
