The Diamondbacks and RHP Chad Qualls avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $4.185 million contract.
Qualls is looking at a nice raise from the $2.535 million he earned in 2009. The 31-year-old had a 3.63 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 51 appearances last season while earning 25 saves in 29 opportunities. He underwent surgery for a dislocated kneecap in late August but should be fine for the start of the 2010 season and enters the year as the D'Backs' closer.

Diamondbacks team physicians have recommended surgery for Chad Qualls and his dislocated left kneecap.
Qualls isn't expected to seek another opinion. He will only need three or four months for recovery once the procedure is finished, which should leave him enough time to get ready for the start of spring training 2010. The closer was placed on the disabled list Monday evening and finishes the year with a 3.63 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 24 saves.

Diamondbacks placed RHP Chad Qualls on the 60-day disabled list with a dislocated left kneecap.
Juan Gutierrez is expected to take over primary ninth-inning duties, with Clay Zavada filling in the gaps. Qualls' injury appeared pretty serious, and it's not clear how it will affect his readiness for next season.

Chad Qualls will have an MRI for a dislocated kneecap sustained on the final play of Sunday's game.
You could see the dislocation," said Arizona manager A.J. Hinch. "The trainer popped the kneecap back in place, but now we'll just have to wait and see how much damage there was." The Diamondbacks just traded their fallback for Qualls, Jon Rauch, to the Twins, so it's uncertain who will save games if Qualls lands on the DL. Juan Gutierrez would seem to be the best bet.

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Diamonbacks have placed right-handed closer Chad Qualls on waivers.
Qualls has compiled 23 saves along with a 3.58 ERA this season on a bad Arizona ball club. He's owed less than a million dollars the rest of the way, so contending teams are going to be highly interested, but the D'Backs aren't going to ship him off without a nice return of prospects.

Manager A.J. Hinch said that closer Chad Qualls may continue to get called on for more than just the ninth inning.
"I agree . . . that the most important outs might be in that eighth inning and you have to be prepared to ask your closer to do that," Hinch said. "But I also understand that if you do that, it's going to cost you over the next couple days. At some point that's going to catch up to you." Qualls has made four appearances in the eighth inning this season, including two in the past week.
