The Rays and SS Jason Bartlett avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $4 million contract.
Bartlett, 30, had a breakout year in 2009 and will try to top it this season as Tampa's starting shortstop, but some regression should be expected from the .287/.350/.394 career hitter. He finished '09 with a .320/.389/.490 batting line, 14 home runs, 66 RBI and 30 stolen bases.

Jason Bartlett finished 3-for-5 in a win over the Blue Jays on Monday night.
It appeared that Bartlett was starting to cool off in July, but a move to the top of the lineup seems to have rejuvenated him. Since sliding to the leadoff spot on August 3, Bartlett is hitting .390 with 13 RBI and 15 runs scored in 18 games.

Ben Zobrist will lead off against the Orioles on Tuesday.
A good move by Joe Maddon with Jason Bartlett out of the lineup and B.J. Upton continuing to struggle. Zobrist hasn't exactly cleaned up out of the No. 4 spot in the order, putting up a lowly .257/.364/.366 with two homers and eight RBI since the All-Star break. Perhaps this will spark him.

Jason Bartlett went 3-for-5 with a homer, a triple and a double on Monday night.
Bartlett was just a single short of becoming the second big-league shortstop to hit for the cycle tonight. Instead, he had to settle for a three-XBH game that raised his average to .340 and his slugging percentage to .547. He's hitting .433 since his move to the leadoff spot earlier this month.
