Blue Jays acquired RHP Merkin Valdez from the Giants for cash considerations.
The Giants resisted exposing him to waivers last season, but after he posted a 5.66 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in 48 games, they finally lost hope. There's no doubt that the former top prospect has an electric arm, but there's little indication that he really knows where the ball will go when it leaves his hand. The Blue Jays will at least try to tap into that potential during Spring Training.

According to Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com, the Blue Jays have acquired right-handed reliever Merkin Valdez from the Giants for cash considerations.
The Giants designated him for assignment last week after the signing of Aubrey Huff. The 28-year-old Valdez tallied a 5.66 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in 48 relief appearances with the Giants last season. The big right-hander has a great arm, but command has been hard to come by so far (5.1 BB/9 in 67 big league innings).

The Giants had to clear room on their 40-man roster with the signing of Aubrey Huff. Valdez, 28, was trusted as a set-up man early in the season, but faded to a 5.66 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in 48 relief appearances. He's always struggled with his command, but someone will surely take a chance with his impressive velocity.

Merkin Valdez left the Giants Wednesday to be with his wife, who went into labor back in San Francisco.
The Giants are headed home for a weekend series against the Cubs, so it should work out nicely for both the club and Valdez. He started the season strong, but has an 8.10 ERA over his last 23 appearances.

Merkin Valdez has emerged as the primary setup man in San Francisco.
The Giants forked over close to $11 million for relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Bobby Howry this offseason, but Valdez has been the most reliable man in the 'pen. "Merkin, the way he's throwing, he's going to be helping to set up," manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday night.

Merkin Valdez was credited with the win in relief after getting two outs Wednesday in the Giants' 10-8 victory over the Dodgers.
By virtue of being out of options, Valdez has again made the Giants. In his defense, he's bounced back nicely from a rough start, turning in scoreless appearances his last six times out. He's allowed five runs and walked eight in 9 1/3 innings over the course of the spring.
