The Rockies and RHP Jason Hammel avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.9 million contract.
It was his first chance in arbitration. Hammel, 27, was 10-8 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 34 games (30 starts) after being acquired from the Rays before the start of last season. He's expected to be Colorado's No. 5 starter in 2010.

 Jorge De La Rosa-S - Rockies Oct. 4 - 1:33 am et

Jorge De La Rosa has been diagnosed with tightness in his right groin.
De La Rosa departed his Saturday start in the fourth inning and will be reexamined Sunday to determine if there's a strain. If he's forced to miss the NLDS, the Rockies are likely to go with Jason Hammel.

 Jason Hammel-S - Rockies Oct. 1 - 12:20 am et

Jason Hammel yielded four runs over five innings in a 10-6 win over the Brewers on Wednesday night.
It was Hammel's shortest start since August 30, however the eight strikeouts matched a season-high. Hammel wraps up his season at 10-8 with a 4.39 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 33 appearances (30 starts). He should be the club's long reliever during the playoffs.

Jason Hammel held the Dodgers to two runs over seven innings, but suffered a no-decision in an eventual 5-4 win in 10 innings.
He tossed a season-high 118 pitches in the no-decision, scattering eight hits against a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Hammel actually left the game with the lead, but Matt Daley blew his chance at a win in the bottom of the ninth. Hammel has allowed three runs over his last two starts, lowering his ERA to 4.43.
 Jason Hammel-S - Rockies Aug. 20 - 10:55 pm et

Jason Hammel allowed just a single run over seven innings in Colorado's 4-1 victory over the Nationals on Thursday night.
It was the first time in nine starts that Hammel has been able to complete seven innings. He did so in sharp form, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out three. Despite the impressive outing, it's tough to recommend Hammel in his next turn against the Dodgers.
 Jason Hammel-S - Rockies Aug. 9 - 6:30 pm et

Jason Hammel was roughed up for 11 hits on Sunday but still managed to limit the Cubs to three runs in five-plus innings and pick up a win.
Hammel did hit a batter, though that he didn't issue any free passes while striking out four helped. It's certainly not a recipe for long-term success, but it worked today and allowed Hammel to improve to 7-6. He'll get the Marlins in Florida next time out, making him a borderline NL-only option this week.
