The Athletics and 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.1 million contract.
The 28-year-old third baseman batted .255 with 18 home runs and 88 RBI with the Padres last season and was acquired from the Padres over the weekend. While his lowly .308 career on-base percentage is in sharp contrast to Billy Beane's typical model for success, Kouzmanoff is a better all-around alternative than anything the Athletics had internally for the hot corner.

 Kevin Kouzmanoff-3B - Athletics Jan. 16 - 8:30 pm et

Athletics acquired third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and second baseman Eric Sogard from the Padres for outfielders Aaron Cunningham and Scott Hairston.
Kouzmanoff's approach at the plate is broken, but he's still a whole lot better than what the A's have run out at third base in years. He'll play awfully steady defense and probably drive in 80-90 runs in the middle of the order. What this means for Chavez is anyone's guess. The A's can try to find room for him at DH, but he'd have to prove he's worthy of the defensive downgrade required from moving Jack Cust to the outfield. In truth, this is the A's way of saying that they just don't see Chavez contributing in the final year of his contract.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics have acquired third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and a prospect from the Padres in exchange for outfielders Scott Hairston and Aaron Cunningham.
The Athletics have been in the market for a competent third baseman all winter and after Adrian Beltre signed with Boston, they turned their attention back to Kouzmanoff. The 28-year-old third baseman has a .261/.308/.435 batting line in four major league seasons. His exit will clear the way for Chase Headley to be the everyday third baseman in San Diego.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Athletics have acquired third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff from the Padres.
According to Slusser, outfielder Scott Hairston will return to San Diego as part of the deal. Two other players are involved, but it's not confirmed who they are or which way they are headed. Kouzmanoff, 28, batted .255/.302/.420 with 18 homers and 88 RBI last season.

 Andy LaRoche-3B - Pirates Jan. 6 - 5:07 pm et

According to Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com, the Athletics have "broached the subject" of trading for Andy LaRoche of the Pirates.
The Athletics made a big play for Adrian Beltre before he signed with the Red Sox, but they are still looking for a solution at third base. The 26-year-old LaRoche is an interesting case, as the Pirates have young Pedro Alvarez rapidly rising through their minor league system. LaRoche batted just .258/.330/.410 with 12 home runs and 64 RBI last season, but hinted that there is some power in his bat after all by slamming eight home runs after the All-Star break. According to Urban, the Athletics have also considered a trade for Kevin Kouzmanoff of the Padres.

 Kevin Kouzmanoff-3B - Athletics Dec. 25 - 11:12 am et

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, trade talks surrounding Padres third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff have "cooled."
The Padres fielded multiple offers for Kouz during the Winter Meetings in December and talks could always heat up again. The 28-year-old third baseman batted a respectable .255/.302/.420 with 18 homers and 88 RBI in 2009 but the Padres are ready to slide Chase Headley back to the hot corner.
