Collin Balester will miss the remainder of the 2010 season with a strain on his left side.
Balester will be shut down for two weeks before beginning his trek back. By the time he'd be ready to return, the season will have ended, saddling him with a 2009 line of 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in seven starts. He will compete for a gig with Washington in spring training.

Nationals optioned RHP Colin Balester to Triple-A Syracuse.
Balester has a 6.82 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 30 1/3 innings (seven starts) this season. There's a chance he could return when rosters expand.

Colin Balester notched his first win of the season with six innings of two-run ball against the Brewers on Tuesday night.
The win was his first since last August 26. Balester scattered just five hits, including a homer, against three walks and zero strikeouts. With the shaky back end of the Nats' rotation, Balester has a really shot to stick as the season wears on.

Collin Balester allowed three runs -- two earned -- over three-plus innings in a rain-shortened effort against the Cardinals on Thursday night.
Balester, making his first start of the season for the Nats, was pulled following a long rain delay after he walked Ryan Ludwick to lead off the fourth inning. Ludwick came around to score after the game continued. Balester also let in an unearned run in the first and gave up a home run to Rick Ankiel in the second. Balester, filling in for injured Jordan Zimmermann, will draw the Brewers next.

Nationals recalled RHP Collin Balester from Triple-A Syracuse.
Balester takes the spot of injured starter Jordan Zimmermann. Balester will get the start on Thursday against the Cardinals. He was 7-9 with a 4.35 ERA in 19 starts at Syracuse, although he has pitched better recently, going 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA in his last 12 starts.

Collin Balester was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits in three-plus innings Tuesday in his start for Triple-A Syracuse.
Balester was supposed to be next in line for a spot in Washington's rotation, but he's gone 1-5 with a 6.35 ERA for Syracuse. At least for now, he can't be viewed as a possible replacement for Daniel Cabrera.
