The Angels and C Mike Napoli avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.6 million contract.
Terms of the deal were not made immediately available. Napoli hit .272/.350/.492 in 2009 and has a career OPS+ of 120.

Mike Napoli is starting behind the plate in Game 4 of the ALCS.
Jeff Mathis played the hero in Game 3 Monday with an extra-innings walkoff RBI double and is 4-for-9 (.444) this postseason, but Napoli has been the more consistent hitter all year. Plus, Napoli has caught all but one of Scott Kazmir's starts since the lefty arrived in Anaheim on August 28.

Napoli is batting eighth behind Maicer Izturis, who is starting at second base against Yankees right-hander A.J. Burnett. Napoli will provide a bit more offense for the Angels, who are down one game in the best-of-seven series.

Mike Napoli will start behind the plate in Game 2 against the Red Sox.
Angels Game 2 starter Jered Weaver has a 3.38 ERA in the 141 1/3 innings he has thrown to Mathis this season, and an ugly 4.59 ERA in 68 2/3 innings with Napoli, but manager Mike Scioscia's decision was made with offense in mind. Napoli hit .272/.350/.492 this season with 20 homers and 56 RBI while his counterpart, Mathis, batted just .211/.288/.308 with five bombs.

Mike Napoli went 2-for-3 with his 20th homer and three runs scored Sunday versus the A's.
Napoli bounced back a bit in the end, delivering three homers in his final eight starts of the season. He may do less catching than Jeff Mathis in the ALDS anyway, but he deserves better after an excellent offensive season.
