Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Mario Lemieux and Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle recently made an unsolicited offer to buy the Pirates from Bob Nutting.
They never heard a response, but when asked about the offer by Kovacevic, Nutting made it pretty clear that he is not selling the team. "Honestly, I'm not sure there's a situation to describe," said Nutting. "I like Ron. He's an extremely competent businessman and deal-maker, and we've talked about a wide range of topics. But I think the simplest way to say this is that there never has been a substantive or formal offer for the team. The team is not for sale." There's probably not much to it, but anytime Lemieux is mentioned, Pittsburgh will listen.

Pirates owner Bob Nutting said he sees the team's payroll eventually rising to the level of the Reds and Brewers.
"I think that's expected. I think it's rational. I think it's where Pittsburgh needs to be," said Nutter. "And we're in that trajectory now. As you see our current core of players -- one I have faith in -- as they mature, the dollars are going to increase. If that needs to be supplemented, we need to have the flexibility to be able to do that." The team's Opening Day payroll will likely be in the $35 million range, down from $48 million last season, while the Brewers and Reds are each around $75 million.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates have payroll flexibility this winter.
"Neal's got room," team president Frank Coonelly said. "Trust me, he's out there working to use it. He's got significant flexibility." By Kovacevic's math, the Pirates could have roughly $15 million to spend this winter if they aim to be somewhere around their $49 million payroll from 2009. Still, general manager Neal Huntington doesn't plan to make a move just for the sake of making a move.

Chris Coghlan won the National League Rookie of the Year award.
This a mild surprise, because of the competition Coghlan had for the award. He beat out J.A. Happ, Tommy Hanson and Andrew McCutchen. Our ballot would have given preference to Happ and McCutchen. Regardless, Coghlan was excellent in his debut campaign, hitting .321/.390/.460 in 565 plate appearances with 84 runs scored, 31 doubles, and nine steals in 128 games.

According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Pirates GM Neal Huntington will explore the mid-tier free agent market more aggressively this winter than in the past.
Langosch writes that the Pirates are likely to pursue a corner outfielder and bullpen help, but Huntington plans to act with restraint before adding payroll. "We're not just going to go sign free agents because we have the money or because we want to make our fans or ourselves feel better," Huntington said. "We're going to sign the guys that we feel can help us and that we believe won't fall into that trap [of being washed up], but also for the right dollars and the right length and right fit. It may mean that we get shut out. It may mean that we get one. It may also mean that we get two or three guys that fall into that set of criteria. But the last thing we want to do is just sign free agents to assign money."

Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored Monday against the Dodgers.
A second straight three-hit game for the rookie. Unfortunately, McCutchen didn't attempt a steal after reaching first base four times today. He's 2-for-4 stealing bases this month after going 15-for-18 during his first three mnths in the majors.
