The Rays and RHP Matt Garza avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.35 million contract.
As a super-two, this was his first chance at arbitration. Garza, who turned 27 in November, was 8-12 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.26 WHIP last season, logging 189 strikeouts in a career-high 203 innings. He's still a couple steps away from being considered an ace.

Matt Garza allowed three runs over six innings on Thursday night, taking a loss as the Rays fell to the Orioles 3-2.
Garza finishes the season at 8-12, which is certainly a bad break for a guy who posted a solid 3.95 ERA and allowed opponents to hit only .233 against him. On the bright side, Garza was basically healthy all year, racking up over 200 innings in 32 starts, and he posted the best strikeout rate of his young major-league career. He's in line for another strong season in 2010, when he'll be 26.

Matt Garza hurled seven-plus scoreless innings Saturday night in a 4-0 defeat of the Blue Jays.
Garza handled his business over the first 7 1/3 innings, and the Rays' bullpen was able to successfully maintain the shutout. The right-hander issued six walks, but countered with 10 strikeouts. He's now 8-10 on the season with a 3.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP.

Matt Garza was handed a tough loss on Sunday after allowing three runs in 7 1/3 innings against the Red Sox.
Garza struck out eight and walked none in the outing, and he also gave up just one run through seven. However, Dustin Pedroia's two-run homer in the eighth gave the Red Sox the lead as the Rays dropped their 10th straight contest. Garza falls to 7-10 as a result despite a 3.84 ERA.

Matt Garza allowed just an unearned run over seven innings Monday in a no-decision against the Yankees.
This makes seven straight starts without a win for Garza. He has a 2.08 ERA in four starts against the Yankees this year, but an 0-1 record to show for it.

Matt Garza allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings against the Red Sox on Wednesday night, but was handed a no-decision in an 8-5 win.
Good or bad, this guy just can't get a win. Though he left with the lead, Garza wasn't necessarily good on Wednesday, as he yielded six hits and three walks -- he was actually quite fortunate to escape with only four runs scoring. Still stuck at seven wins -- he hasn't won since July 24 -- it doesn't get any easier as he faces the first-place Yankees next time out.
