Fernando Martinez, who underwent surgery on his right knee in July, has finally begun running the bases.
Martinez hit .176/.242/.275 with one home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases in 29 games (91 at-bats) for the Mets this season before getting injured. The 21-year-old outfielder intends to play for Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League, which gets going in early November.

The Mets transferred Martinez in order to make room for Jack Egbert on the 40-man roster. Martinez is recovering from season-ending surgery on his right knee.

Fernando Martinez will be unavailable on Saturday due to a sore right knee.
Martinez appeared as a pinch-hitter to end the game on Friday, but has been noticeably limping around the Mets clubhouse lately. Martinez dealt with similar pain when he was with Single-A Hagerstown in 2006. It looks like Ryan Church will continue to patrol center field for now.
