Fernando Martinez was named the MVP of the Carribean Series for the Dominican Republic.
While America was captivated by the Super Bowl, Los Leones del Escogido defeated Venezuela's Leones del Caracas on Sunday to clinch the title for the Dominican Republic. Martinez batted .348 with two home runs and four RBI in 23 at-bats during the series, a resurgence from his subpar regular season. It should give him a nice boost headed into Spring Training, but another year of seasoning at Triple-A Buffalo is probably in order.

Fernando Martinez finished with an ugly .191 batting average and 13 strikeouts in 47 at-bats for Escogido of the Dominican Winter League.
Martinez underwent season-ending knee surgery last July and is still working his way back to full strength. Still, he's been unimpressive in most professional settings and is likely to spend most of the 2010 season with the Mets' Triple-A affiliate. The 21-year-old hit .176/.242/.275 with one home run and eight RBI in 91 at-bats on the big league level last year.

Fernando Martinez (knee) may be on the trade block, according to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News.
Martinez, 21, is recovering from season-ending surgery on his right knee. He is playing with Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League and plans to play the outfield when not on artificial turf. Rubin says that the Mets delayed Martinez's winter ball debut because the team was talking about trading him. It is unknown who they would trade him for, or if he is still on the block. However, it's a situation worth watching especially with the marquee names thought to be available.

Fernando Martinez (knee) is playing with Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League.
Martinez, 21, is currently working his way back from season-ending surgery on his right knee. He was 1-for-8 with a strikeout in his first weekend of action. Martinez was badly over-matched upon his promotion last season, so if healthy, he should find himself back at Triple-A in 2010.
