The Blue Jays have re-signed starter Shaun Marcum to a one-year, $850,000 contract, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com.
Marcum, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery last September and was set back by a lower back injury in late July -- he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008, when he posted a 3.39 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 25 starts. According to general manager Alex Anthopoulos, Shaun Marcum (elbow) may be cleared for a full workload next season.
Good news for a staff that figures to lose Roy Halladay this winter. Marcum, who turns 28 later this month, underwent Tommy John surgery last September and was set back by a lower back injury in late July. Marcum has a 3.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 7.1 K/9 in parts of four seasons in the majors.

Shaun Marcum (elbow) will pitch in the Blue Jays' fall instructional league.
Marcum underwent Tommy John surgery last September and was set back by a lower back injury in late July. He's feeling better these days and, as the Toronto Sun notes, could be the Opening Day starter next year if Roy Halladay is traded this offseason. Marcum had a 3.39 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 25 starts in 2008.

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said Tuesday that his 2010 rotation is set.
Of course, a lot can happen between now and April 2010: "Well you've got Roy Halladay -- if he stays," Gaston said. "Shaun Marcum, Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil and Marc Rzepczynski. Maybe in May or June Jesse Litsch comes back. And if we move Roy Halladay we'll get a starter back." Rzepczynski struck out nine Tuesday in his final start of the 2009 season.

Shaun Marcum (elbow surgery) will most likely finish the 2009 season in the minors.
"He's healthy," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "There's nothing wrong with him, but there's no reason to rush him. He's going to pitch next year for us. He'll be like 17 months post-op at that time. He feels good. We'll probably just keep throwing him, but there's really probably no need to get him to the big leagues at this point." At one point the Jays thought that Marcum, who underwent Tommy John surgery last September, could return in August, but he tweaked his back towards the end of July, leading the Jays to reconsider their plans. Marcum has a 2.30 ERA in five rehab appearances.

Shaun Marcum's rehab assignment has been put on hold as he recuperates from a newly strained back muscle.
Marcum was in Toronto on Monday, getting treatment from team doctors. "He's going to get some treatment from our trainers and then he'll be back off to [Triple-A] Las Vegas (where he is currently on a rehab assignment)," said manager Cito Gaston. A mid-August return is still feasible.
