Geovany Soto has lost 40 pounds since the 2009 season ended, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.
Soto, who turned 27 on Wednesday, went from a size 42 waist to size 36 in the process. "I felt I needed to do something, I felt I needed to go to the next level," said Soto. "I felt I needed to show my teammates I'm really into this, I really want to play, I want to play hard, I'm committed to this and I want to win." The Cubs' backstop won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2008, but struggled to a .218/.321/.381 batting line with 11 home runs and 47 RBI last season, battling shoulder and oblique injuries. He'll enter 2010 looking for redemption.

 Geovany Soto-C - Cubs Sep. 12 - 4:20 pm et

Geovany Soto was 2-for-3 with three RBI in a loss to the Reds on Saturday.
Soto hit a pair of run-scoring doubles, including a game-tying two-bagger in the seventh. Soto has driven in at least two runs in each of his last four starts. It's been a long wait for fantasy owners, but perhaps he's finally getting hot.

The Cubs tied a major-league record with eight hits to start a game in a 9-4 win over the Pirates on Tuesday night.
The first five batters against reached on singles to set up a two-run double by Goevany Soto and another double by Kosuke Fukudome to plate Soto with the inning's sixth run. The Cubs would score seven in the top of the first inning, a hole the Pirates just couldn't dig themselves out of.

Geovany Soto plated both Cubs runs with a pair of doubles in Sunday's loss.
It's not always easy to find a bright side while getting shut down by Mike Pelfrey, but here's one. Soto was starting just his second game of the month, as the Cubs have gone more and more to Koyie Hill even though the season is a lost cause. Soto had multiple extra-base hits for the first time since June 24. The Cubs definitely need the offense with Jake Fox having been banished to the bench for some bizarre reason.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Sunday that Geovany Soto will begin losing starts to Koyie Hill if his struggles at the plate continue.
Soto went hitless on Sunday and is just 6-for-47 (.128) in the month of August. ''I think we'll catch Koyie Hill a lot more,'' Piniella said. ''It's been a struggle.'' Hill is batting .245 with two home runs and 19 RBI overall this season in 196 at-bats, compared to Soto's .212 batting average, nine home runs and 31 RBI in 264 at-bats.
