Geovany Soto has lost 40 pounds since the 2009 season ended, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.
Soto, who turned 27 on Wednesday, went from a size 42 waist to size 36 in the process. "I felt I needed to do something, I felt I needed to go to the next level," said Soto. "I felt I needed to show my teammates I'm really into this, I really want to play, I want to play hard, I'm committed to this and I want to win." The Cubs' backstop won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2008, but struggled to a .218/.321/.381 batting line with 11 home runs and 47 RBI last season, battling shoulder and oblique injuries. He'll enter 2010 looking for redemption. |
