Manager Jim Riggleman gives Matt Capps the slight edge on ninth-inning duties headed into Spring Training.
"I'd probably start with Capps and go from there," said Riggleman. "I think it's really a good situation to have a few guys that are comfortable pitching in the 9th inning." Riggleman stated a willingness to go to Sean Burnett or Eddie Guardado against the lefty-heavy Phillies, or even Brian Bruney depending on who is freshest, but the newly-signed Capps looks like the front-runner for the gig. Capps, 26, signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Nationals earlier this month after posting a 5.80 ERA and 1.66 WHIP with the Pirates last season.

 Matt Capps-R - Nationals Jan. 6 - 9:51 am et

Nationals signed RHP Matt Capps to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
Capps received a good deal of interest this winter after he was non-tendered by the Pirates but ultimately chose the Nationals because he was promised a chance at closing duties. The 26-year-old right-hander had a disappointing 5.80 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 54-plus innings for the Pirates last season though he did set a career-high with 27 total saves.
 Eddie Guardado-R - Nationals Dec. 30 - 9:57 am et

Eddie Guardado told MLB.com's Bill Ladson Tuesday that he would like to close for the Nationals next season.
It's not going to happen, at least not at the beginning of the season. Matt Capps is currently the favorite for saves in Washington and Brian Bruney is a close second. Guardado, who had a 4.46 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 20/16 K/BB ratio in 2009, is headed for a setup or middle relief role.

 Brian Bruney-R - Nationals Dec. 29 - 9:17 am et

Brian Bruney told MLB.com's Bill Ladson on Monday that he would "prefer to close" next season for the Nationals.
"I think as a reliever, that is the ultimate goal," said Bruney. "I think if you are not a starter, the closer is the coolest job. That's what I did from Day 1, when I got drafted. I'm sure that's what [Nats GM] Mike Rizzo knows me as." He'll have to put on a show this spring to beat out Matt Capps for the gig. A setup role seems more realistic for Bruney and is probably a better fit anyway.

 Brian Bruney-R - Nationals Dec. 24 - 6:37 pm et

Brian Bruney is expected to serve in a setup role with the Nationals, with Matt Capps manning ninth-inning duties.
Both were acquired as free agents this winter. Bruney, 27, had a better 2009 season but the younger Capps has far more closing experience. Capps, in fact, has issued only 50 walks in 271 2/3 career innings. The Nationals also brought 39-year-old left-hander Eddie Guardado aboard this offseason and he is expected to assist in a middle relief or setup role.

Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports that Matt Capps will earn a $3.5 million base salary in his one-year contract with the Nationals.
He could take home another $425,000 based on games finished. According to Capps' agent, his client chose the Nationals over the Cubs and the Mets, who proposed a last-minute bid similar to Washington's, but the 26-year-old right-hander picked the best situation to re-establish his value. He's now the prohibitive favorite for saves in Washington.
