Royals signed outfielder Buck Coats to a minor league contract.
Coats, 27, hit .302/.361/.416 with six homers and 56 RBI in 2009 while playing at the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas. He's a longshot to crack the Royals' 2010 roster and is probably just organizational depth.

Blue Jays sent outfielder Buck Coats and RHP T.J. Beam outright to Triple-A Las Vegas; reassigned RHP Bryan Bullington to minor league camp.
The Jays keep whittling away at their 40-man roster in anticipation of making more waiver claims. Bullington and Fabio Castro were both bumped last week, so they have four openings now. The 26-year-old Coats had been on the 40-man since Dec. 2007, even though the team didn't think he was worthy of a September callup last year. He was 3-for-11 this spring.
 Vernon Wells-OF - Blue Jays Feb. 23 - 3:46 pm et

Vernon Wells suffered a strained left hamstring on Monday and could miss a month or more.
"Right now, preliminarily, I'd say he's going to miss four weeks," said Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi before seeing the results of an MRI scheduled for this afternoon. If Wells has to open the season on the disabled list, the Jays would likely shift Alex Rios to center, with Jason Lane or Buck Coats taking over in right field. The Jays might want to look into signing Jay Payton or maybe Moises Alou as added insurance.
