Brandon Moss will not compete for a starting job in 2010, manager John Russell said.
"Brandon realizes the opportunity he had here and that he didn't take advantage of it," said Russell. Russell went on to say that even a bench role is not guaranteed for Moss. It's a disappointing slide for the former Boston farmhand who came over in the Jason Bay trade. If Moss doesn't play Sunday, he finishes 2009 at .235/.300/.363 in 383 at-bats with seven home runs.

 Brandon Moss-OF - Pirates Jul. 22 - 4:09 pm et

Brandon Moss hit a walkoff homer off Mitch Stetter in the bottom of the ninth as the Pirates edged the Brewers 8-7 on Wednesday.
Not the way it figured to go down. Yes, Moss had homered in two of his last three starts, but he had just one career homer in 100 at-bats against southpaws and left-handed hitters were hitting .111 in 63 at-bats against Stetter this year. Moss, who had lost a bunch of playing time to Garrett Jones, could start getting it back now, especially if he stays hot. He's worth considering in any NL-only leagues in which he was dropped.
 Brandon Moss-OF - Pirates Jul. 3 - 10:53 pm et

Brandon Moss hit his second homer of the year Friday in the victory over the Pirates.
It was his lone hit in five at-bats. With Nate McLouth and Nyjer Morgan gone, the Pirates might as well give Moss one more chance to play regularly. He's done nothing recently to deserve it, but the alternatives aren't at all attractive.
 Garrett Jones-OF - Pirates Jul. 1 - 9:54 pm et

Manager John Russell indicated Wednesday that Garrett Jones would get plenty of playing time to show whether he can be an everyday player or not.
After starting in left field and batting third, Jones went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs. Left field and right field figure to remain fluid among Jones, Brandon Moss, Delwyn Young and Steven Pearce, with playing time dependent on production.

 Delwyn Young-2B - Pirates Jun. 16 - 5:14 pm et

Delwyn Young is starting in right field for a third consecutive game on Tuesday.
The switch-hitting outfielder has hit .529 (9-for-17) in his last five games and is worth a look in NL-only leagues as he continues to take playing time away from the struggling Brandon Moss.

 Brandon Moss-OF - Pirates May. 19 - 11:50 pm et

Brandon Moss was 2-for-5 with three RBI in an extra-inning win over the Nationals on Tuesday night.
Moss bookended the game with an RBI double to plate two in the first and an RBI single to score another in the Pirates' three-run tenth. With six multi-hit games in his last seven, Moss has pulled his batting average all the way up to .261.
