The Marlins and RHP Leo Nunez avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $2 million contract.
Nunez finished with a 4.06 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and tallied 26 saves in 33 opportunities last season. He will open spring training as the club's closer and should carry the role into the regular season, but the Marlins always have several youngsters ready to step in should the front-runner slip up.

 Leo Nunez-R - Marlins Dec. 3 - 12:47 pm et

Marlins president Larry Beinfest tabbed Leo Nunez as the frontrunner for ninth-inning duties headed into 2010.
Nunez posted a 4.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 26 saves in 33 opportunities in 2009, but it was apparently enough for Beinfest to say former closer Matt Lindstrom will have to win his job back. Fantasy owners will have to keep a close eye on this situation during spring training.

 Leo Nunez-R - Marlins Sep. 6 - 4:43 pm et

Leo Nunez gave up two homers and three runs to blow a save and take a loss in the ninth inning Sunday against the Nationals.
That's two blown saves in three chances this month for Nunez, though he did come away with the victory in the previous blown opportunity. He's now allowed 12 homers in 60 1/3 innings this season. All of his other numbers are exactly what one likes to see from a closer, but the long balls are killers, and it's worth wondering whether we'll begin to see Matt Lindstrom eased back into ninth-inning duties as the month goes on.

Leo Nunez earned his 12th save after relieving a struggling Matt Lindstrom on Monday night.
Lindstrom opened the ninth inning with the Marlins leading by five and got one quick out, but after Kaz Matsui reached on an error Lindstrom gave up a single and a two-run double before being pulled in favor of Nunez. Lindstrom ended up being charged with three runs -- only one of them earned. This was his first rough outing since returning from the disabled list, so we're not too worried.

Marlins activated RHP Matt Lindstrom from the 15-day disabled list.
Lindstrom sat out over a month with an inflamed right elbow. He's ready to start contributing again, but Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez has said repeatedly that the right-hander will be eased back into the closer's role. Leo Nunez and Dan Meyer can take their last gasps of glory.

Matt Lindstrom is expected to return to the Marlins by this weekend.
Lindstrom has been on the disabled list since June 24 with elbow inflammation. "Maybe by the end of the week, if everything goes well -- knock on wood everything goes well," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez. The right-hander will be eased back into ninth-inning duties.
