Diamondbacks signed 2B Kelly Johnson to a one-year, $2.35 million contract.
The club will also retain his rights as an arbitration-eligible player for 2011. The Diamondbacks had a host of internal options at second base, but they'll bank on a rebound season from the 27-year-old. Johnson has fallen into some bad habits at the plate, hitting just .224/.303/.389 in '09, but he is just two seasons removed from 16 homers and an .831 OPS. It's a risk worth taking, even if he's a flop.

 Kelly Johnson-2B - Diamondbacks Dec. 30 - 4:01 pm et

Kelly Johnson passed his physical with the Diamondbacks, reports Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
It was the last hurdle before finalizing a one-year, $2.3 million contract with Arizona. An official announcement is expected later today. The 27-year-old Johnson is expected to be Arizona's starting second baseman in 2010, coming off a .224/.303/.389 showing with the Braves last season.

Kelly Johnson is scheduled to take a physical for the Diamondbacks Wednesday, thus finalizing his one-year, $2 million contract with the club.
Johnson will take over starting second base duties for the D'Backs in 2010. The 27-year-old hit just .224/.303/.389 with eight home runs and 29 RBI this past year but produced a .282/.362/.451 batting line in the two previous seasons combined. It sounds like a smart contract for both sides.

The Diamondbacks and Kelly Johnson have reached agreement on a one-year contract worth a little more than $2 million, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.
Gilbert writes via Twitter that final details are being worked out and a physical is to come. Johnson becomes the heavy favorite to take over Arizona's starting second base job. The 27-year-old hit just .224/.303/.389 with eight home runs and 29 RBI this past year, but produced a .282/.362/.451 line in 2007-08 combined.

 Kelly Johnson-2B - Diamondbacks Dec. 29 - 6:12 pm et

The Diamondbacks and Kelly Johnson are nearing agreement on a contract -- if they haven't already done so -- according to a report by Arizona Republic.
The proposed deal is believed to be worth around $2 million for one season and would likely slot Johnson as the team's starting second baseman. The 27-year-old hit just .224/.303/.389 with eight home runs and 29 RBI this past year, but produced a .282/.362/.451 line in the two previous seasons combined. If Johnson can bounce back, this would be a stellar bargain-basement move by the D'Backs. One ancillary benefit: the club would control his rights in 2011 if they inked him to a one-year deal.

The Diamondbacks expect to hear in the next couple of days whether Kelly Johnson has accepted their contract offer.
The proposed deal is believed to be worth around $2 million. Johnson is exploring other options but is unlikely to find a better situation than Arizona, where he will start at second base. The 27-year-old hit just .224/.303/.389 with eight home runs and 29 RBI this past year.
