Tyler Greene expects to get a fair crack at the Cardinals' starting third base gig during spring training.
David Freese is the unquestionable favorite, and Greene will have to really put on a show in camp to change that. Greene, 26, hit just .222/.270/.324 in 108 at-bats on the big league level last season. "I’m going to compete as hard as I can and make it as tough on them as I can at the end of spring," he said Monday. At least the kid has the right attitude.

Cardinals recalled infielder Tyler Greene from Triple-A Memphis.
This will be Greene's third stint with the Cardinals this season. He was shipped back to Memphis most recently in early July, mired in an 0-for-22 stretch. In 112 plate appearances overall for the Cardinals this season, he has batted .219/.261/.324.

Greene has been slumping horribly of late, mired in an 0-for-22 stretch. He was replaced on the roster by Brian Barden.

Brendan Ryan was scratched from Saturday's starting lineup against the Reds with "gastrointestinal distress."
It's not as serious as it sounds. Ryan is simply suffering from an upset stomach and probably spent pregame workouts in a bathroom stall, rather than on the field or in the batting cage. Tyler Greene is playing shortstop.

Brendan Ryan was given a cortisone shot in his sore right wrist Friday and is unlikely to start a game this weekend.
Monday is the target date for his return to the starting lineup. The Cardinals have a whole host of interchangable parts that could fill in at shortstop or slide to third, so we won't speculate on who might get the majority of starts this weekend. Tyler Greene is getting the nod at short on Friday.

Brendan Ryan will return to the lineup Monday after missing Sunday's game with leg cramps.
Ryan was forced out of Saturday's game because of leg cramps. It appears that the main culprit for Ryan's cramping problem is his diet: he was told to eat more in order to avoid dehydration. He will return to short, while Tyler Greene returns to the bench.
