The Royals will try to re-sign free agent Tony Pena Jr. this offseason, but only if he's willing to continue his career as a pitcher.
Pena made the switch from shortstop to reliever after he was designated for assignment by the Royals on July 16. He posted a 2.33 ERA in 19 1/3 innings between Single-A and Triple-A, fanning 18 against just six walks. "We think he has some potential as a pitcher," Royals GM Dayton Moore said Tuesday.

 Tony Pena Jr.-R - Giants Jul. 26 - 3:08 pm et

Tony Pena Jr. threw a bullpen session Friday for Royals pitching coach Bob McClure and will head to Arizona to work off the mound.
Pena, who was dropped from Kansas City's roster 10 days ago, could work his way back to the majors as a reliever. "We're looking at the possibility of converting him, if all goes well as far as how his arm reacts," manager Trey Hillman said. "We'll get him off to Arizona, start taking a look at him on the mound and see how that goes. My preference would be to see him in a bullpen situation just because of his touch and feel with throwing a baseball and because of his arm strength. I would say he's probably a setup candidate." He's also probably an injury candidate, but if he survives the transition, perhaps he could be an interesting relief option in a year or two. His arm strength isn't in question.

Royals designated infielder Tony Pena Jr. for assignment.
Pena, now 28, was a massive disappointment during his three years with the Royals and was off to his worst start yet this season. The shortstop will leave behind a .098 /.132/.118 batting line, no home runs and two RBI. He mustered those fine stats in 51 at-bats.
 Tony Pena Jr.-R - Giants Jun. 2 - 4:20 pm et

Royals activated infielder Tony Pena Jr. from the 15-day disabled list.
Pena is in the Royals' starting lineup on Tuesday, but should not be anywhere close to fantasy rosters. He had a dreadful 398 OPS in 225 at-bats last season and started this season 0-for-11 before going down with a broken hand.
 Tony Pena Jr.-R - Giants May. 6 - 12:13 pm et

Tony Pena Jr. underwent successful surgery Tuesday on his broken hand.
Pena is expected to miss four to six weeks. He was 0-for-11 as a utility infielder for the Royals before fracturing his left hamate bone last Saturday.
