Matt LaPorta (hip, toe) believes he is on track for the start of Spring Training.
"I should be able to start Spring Training with everybody else," said LaPorta. "I'll have another checkup with my doctors right before [Spring Training] to make sure I'm 100 percent. I'm on a good pace." LaPorta expects to be cleared for baseball activties next week after undergoing surgeries on his left hip and left big toe in October. The Indians intend to give the 25-year-old every opportunity at first base this season once he's able.

 Matt LaPorta-OF - Indians Nov. 23 - 10:24 am et

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that the Indians are searching for a first baseman in case Matt LaPorta isn't ready for the start of the season.
LaPorta underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left hip and left big toe in October, rendering him a question mark entering 2010. Hoynes floats Jordan Brown, who led the International League with a .336 batting average in 2009, as a possibility, however the Indians would prefer a right-handed hitter to balance out the club's predominantly left-handed lineup.

Matt LaPorta underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left hip and left big toe on Tuesday.
The hip surgery is expected to require 4-6 months of recovery time, which is likely to slow LaPorta down at the beginning of next season. We still expect him to be a mixed league factor in 2010, but odds are against him getting off to a fast start.

Matt LaPorta (left hip inflammation) was held out of the lineup Saturday and may not play for a couple more days.
LaPorta won't be at 100 percent for the rest of the year, but is still expected to get some at-bats before the season ends. He's a couple days away from playing the field. The hamstring first became an issue last Tuesday.

Matt LaPorta is out of the lineup Wednesday with hip inflammation.
No word yet on how long he has been dealing with the injury. It flared up Tuesday while he rounded third in the second inning. Manager Eric Wedge said he believes the injury is a byproduct of LaPorta's recent move from the outfield to first base. "You're using different muscles at first base," Wedge said. "It's a lot more squatting and bending." Regardless, the Indians will keep LaPorta at first for the duration of the season because they believe that is his long-term position. For now, consider him day-to-day.
