General manager Ned Colletti attempted to rein in expectations that he will acquire an ace pitcher over the offseason.
"Every club needs an ace and we're not unlike any club," said Colletti. "We might have one or two in the making [referring to Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley]. But the likelihood of an ace becoming available by trade is very slim. And this [free-agent] class doesn't have that type of allure to it." Ned, meet Roy Halladay. Colletti is surely bluffing, since the team's need for an ace is abundantly clear. As of now, only Kershaw, Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda are expected to return in 2010. Jon Garland, Vicente Padilla and Randy Wolf are all eligible for free agency.

 Vicente Padilla-S - Dodgers Oct. 19 - 7:16 pm et

Vicente Padilla is scheduled to start Game 5 of the NLCS.
Padilla was brilliant in Game 2 against the Phillies, allowing just one run over 7 1/3 innings, and has a 0.63 ERA over two starts this postseason. Clayton Kershaw is likely to start Game 6, if it's played.

 Clayton Kershaw-S - Dodgers Oct. 16 - 12:18 am et

Clayton Kershaw surrendered five runs over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss to the Phillies in his Game 1 start on Thursday.
Kershaw started the game with four scoreless innings, but he fatigued quickly. If manager Joe Torre had it to do over again, he would have yanked the left-hander after Carlos Ruiz hit a three-run homer with none out in the fifth. Kershaw went on to walk the pitcher, and while he got two outs from there, he walked Chase Utley and gave up a two-run double to Ryan Howard before being pulled. Kershaw walked five in all and threw three wild pitches.
 Cole Hamels-S - Phillies Oct. 14 - 6:57 pm et

Cole Hamels will start Game 1 of the NLCS against the Dodgers.
He will oppose Clayton Kershaw. Hamels hasn't pitched since last week and Cliff Lee was used Monday night to clinch the NLDS against the Rockies. Hamels was 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two starts during last year's NLCS against the Dodgers. He shut them out at Dodger Stadium on June 4 of this season. The best-of-seven series starts Thursday at 8:07 PM ET in Los Angeles.

 Clayton Kershaw-S - Dodgers Oct. 14 - 4:58 pm et

Clayton Kershaw will start Game 1 of the NLCS against the Phillies.
Kershaw was slated to start Game 5 of the NLDS had it been necessary, so this announcement comes as no great surprise. It should be noted that the 21-year-old lefty has struggled against the Phillies, going 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA against them in 2009 and 0-3 with a 6.64 ERA in his career.

 Randy Wolf-S - Brewers Oct. 11 - 8:41 am et

The Dodgers are unsure whom of Randy Wolf or Clayton Kershaw will draw the NLCS Game 1 start.
The odds-on favorite to draw the start is Wolf, who pitched just 3 2/3 innings against the Cardinals in Game 1. The team may elect to slot Kershaw for two home game starts, which would necessitate a Game 2 assignment. His ERA at home on the season was a sterling 1.83, compared with 3.81 on the road.
