The Brewers and right-hander Todd Coffey avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $2,025,002 contract.
The contract falls about $50,000 short of the $2.45 million he requested in arbitration on Tuesday, but he can make up that sum with performance incentives. Coffey, 29, posted a 2.90 ERA in 78 appearances with the Brewers last season.

Todd Coffey requested $2.45 million and was offered $1.7 million from the Brewers when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.
Coffey was stellar last season, posting a 2.90 ERA in 78 appearances. He will return to a setup role with the Brewers in 2010.

Todd Coffey has pitched his way into a bullpen spot, Brewers manager Ken Macha announced Monday.
Coffey has a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings this spring. He has walked just one batter and fanned 12. Trevor Hoffman, Carlos Villanueva, Seth McClung, Mitch Stetter and David Riske also have bullpen spots locked up. That should leave the final spot to either Jorge Julio or Mark DiFelice.

Todd Coffey pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three Sunday in relief against the Giants.
Mark DiFelice gave up six runs in his two innings today, so Coffey's chances of making the team got even better. Of course, there could be room for both, especially if Trevor Hoffman lands on the DL. Coffey has a 2.70 ERA this spring, but what's really impressive is his 12/1 K/BB ratio in 10 innings.
 Carlos Villanueva-R - Brewers Mar. 17 - 7:52 pm et

Brewers manager Ken Macha is looking for alternatives at setup man after Carlos Villanueva turned in another rough outing Tuesday.
Villanueva's five runs in 1 1/3 innings led to a Macha rant: "This guy here, Villanueva, has had one good outing all spring, as far as I'm concerned ... He's throwing a lot of pitches and not being able to put the guy away." Macha told pitching coach Billy Castro to look at other options as insurance for Trevor Hoffman, with Todd Coffey and Seth McClung next in line.
