Greg Smith expects to be ready for spring training after a 2009 filled with injuries.
Smith battled illness in spring training then had to fend off shoulder inflammation and back spasms, limiting him 49 1/3 minor league innings. Smith has been following his normal offseason workout routine and will start bullpen sessions next week. The left-hander started 32 major league games for Oakland in 2008 and will battle for a major league spot.

Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd said Sunday that he believes Greg Smith will be ready to contribute at a high level in 2010.
"We think Greg Smith can contribute this year after going through a lot of things last year," O'Dowd said. The 25-year-old lefty was slowed by shoulder inflammation during the entire season and posted an ugly 6.57 ERA on three different minor league levels. He started 32 major league games in 2008.

Rockies recalled LHP Greg Smith from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Smith, 25, has pitched at three different levels this season but has only a lowsy 5.76 ERA to show for it. He'll be used in mop-up duty.

Greg Smith (shoulder inflammation) lasted just 3 1/3 innings Monday in his first rehab start with Double-A Tulsa.
Smith allowed five earned runs on eight hits, including two home runs. It's not necessarily a setback, but his lack of effectiveness is obviously a concern. He may need to make a few more starts with Tulsa before moving on to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Greg Smith threw a successful 25-pitch bullpen session at Coors Field on Thursday morning.
Smith said he is 90 percent sure that he will have a 60-pitch rehab start at Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday. The left-hander has been sidelined at Triple-A because of shoulder inflammation.

Greg Smith threw a four-inning simulated game at Coors Field on Tuesday.
The left-hander has been sidelined at Triple-A due to shoulder inflammation, but could be ready to return to minor league action soon. "It feels good," Smith said. "We will see where it goes from here."
