 Orlando Cabrera-SS- RedsJan. 31 - 1:11 am et
A source told MLB.com that Orlando Cabrera will take a one-year, $3 million contract to play fir the Reds.
The deal also contains a $3 million option for 2011 with a $1 million buyout. We're going to assume that's either a player option or a mutual option, since there's no way Cabrera would want to cap his 2011 salary at $3 million. Cabrera will start at shortstop and probably bat second for the Reds. He'll be a nice upgrade over Paul Janish, even though the Reds will lose some defense with the switch.

 Jamey Carroll-2B - Dodgers Dec. 5 - 5:07 pm et

Reds GM Walt Jocketty acknowledged Saturday that the Reds have legitimate interest in free agent utilityman Jamey Carroll.
"We haven't discussed him at length," Jocketty said of Carroll. "He's gutty and a tough player, a gamer-type of guy that's hard-nosed." The 35-year-old hit .276/.355/.340 with two homers, 26 RBI and 53 runs scored in 93 games with the Indians this past season. He could bring more production to Cincinnati's shortstop position, where Paul Janish currently is currently set to start.

 Paul Janish-SS - Reds Sep. 15 - 10:11 pm et

Paul Janish hit three doubles in a win over the Astros on Tuesday night.
His third double was key, as it pushed the Reds ahead 5-4 in the seventh inning. Known more for his glove, the 26-year-old shortstop is batting just .223/.305/.322 with one home run and 14 RBI in 202 at-bats this season. He shouldn't be a fantasy consideration.
 Ryan Hanigan-C - Reds Jul. 28 - 5:50 pm et

Ryan Hanigan (neck) is out of the lineup against the Padres on Tuesday.
His stiff neck isn't quite ready, but he is listed as day-to-day. Craig Tatum will start again in his place. Paul Janish will serve as emergency catcher in his absence.

 Alex Gonzalez-SS - Blue Jays Jun. 20 - 7:15 pm et

Alex Gonzalez will undergo surgery Tuesday to remove bone chips from his right elbow.
Gonzalez is expected to miss three-to-four weeks. "What can I say? It's tough luck," he said Saturday. "I want to be out there. I missed all of last season. To be out for a while this year is tough. I have to get it done." Jerry Hairston and Paul Janish are expected to split time at shortstop while he's out.
