 Justin Verlander-S- TigersFeb. 4 - 3:20 pm et
Tigers signed RHP Justin Verlander to a five-year, $80 million contract.
The new deal buys out his final two years of arbitration and his first three years of free agency. Consistent with the competitive spirit of Verlander, his contract beats out the five-year, $78 million deal the Mariners gave Felix Hernandez last month. It's hard to argue against him. Verlander, who turns 27 later this month, has quickly emerged as one of the game's top workhorses, leading the American League with 240 innings pitched, 269 strikeouts and 19 wins last season. He has logged at least 200 innings in each of the last three seasons and is just tapping into his considerable potential. The term "ace" is thrown around pretty liberally, but Verlander has shown that he can be a true leader of a staff, even at a young age.

The Associated Press is reporting that right-hander Justin Verlander and the Tigers have agreed to a five-year deal worth $80 million.
Verlander just completed a 19-9 season, posting a 3.45 ERA and an American League-leading 269 strikeouts. The extension covers his final two seasons of arbitration and first three years of free agency. The 25-year-old was reportedly seeking six years, but has apparently settled for five although it is possible an option is attached to the deal. The five-year, $78 million deal Seattle struck with Felix Hernandez served as a guideline during talks.

A source told Yahoo's Jeff Passan that the Tigers are working with Justin Verlander on a five-year contract extension worth around $75 million.
Felix Hernandez's five-year, $78 million extension with the Mariners has sort of set a guideline for the Tigers' talks with Verlander. The Detroit ace is apparently asking for a six-year commitment, but GM Dave Dombrowski isn't likely to go that high. Either way, the extension would cover his last two seasons of arbitration-eligibility and at least three years of free agency. Verlander, 25, went 19-9 last season with a 3.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and an American League-leading 269 strikeouts.

Justin Verlander expects long-term contract talks to begin soon after his salary for 2010 is settled.
Verlander filed for $9.5 million and the Tigers countered with $6.9 million when arbitration figures were exchanged on Tuesday. Finding a middle ground could take a few weeks, though discussions may eventually lead to a long-term agreement. "I think Dave [Dombrowski's] quote is that they want me around for a long time. I want to be here for a long time," Verlander said Thursday. "I know I love it here, and I know I'd like to be here for a long time."

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Justin Verlander filed for $9.5 million in arbitration on Tuesday, while the Tigers countered with $6.9 million.
Verlander, who turns 27 in February, earned $3.675 million with his first chance at arbitration last season, so he figures to at least double his salary this time around. He was 19-9 with a 3.45 ERA last season, leading the American League with 269 strikeouts and 240 innings pitched.

Unless the Tigers acquire a young starter via trade, the rotation will be filled out with in-house options.
This comes courtesy of Jason Beck at MLB.com. Right now, the rotation looks like it will shape up to be Verlander, Edwin Jackson, Rick Porcello and two of Jeremy Bonderman, Armando Galarraga, Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis. If they plan on going with that rotation, they're going to need some big bounceback years if they hope to make the playoffs.
