 Jeff Samardzija-R- CubsOct. 31 - 10:34 am et
Jeff Samardzija tossed six shutout innings in Mexican League action Friday.
Samardzija struck out seven and walked one, lowering his ERA to 2.25. The 24-year old is expected to get a shot at a rotation spot in spring training. Many think Samardzija should be made into a reliever, but the Cubs aren't prepared to do that just yet.

 Jeff Samardzija-R - Cubs Oct. 2 - 9:22 am et

Jeff Samardzija has agreed to play winter ball in Mexico this offseason.
Like it or not, it looks like Samardzija is going to get a fair crack at a spot in the Cubs' 2010 starting rotation. 'Hopefully, he comes to camp next year and competes for a job in our rotation. It'd be wonderful,'' manager Lou Piniella said before Thursday's rainout. 'I think that's the consensus [to make him a starter].'' The former Notre Dame wideout posted a rough 7.53 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 20 appearances (two starts) this season.

 Jeff Samardzija-R - Cubs Oct. 1 - 11:33 pm et

Jeff Samardzija gave up three runs in three innings against the Pirates before Thursday's game was canceled.
So his ERA reverted from 7.65 back to 7.53. Samardzija had a 2.28 ERA in 27 2/3 innings out of the pen in 2008, but the Cubs jerked him around throughout this season and got nothing out of him as a result. The smart move would be to put him in the pen and leave him there next year.
 Jeff Samardzija-R - Cubs Sep. 23 - 11:05 pm et

Jeff Samardzija allowed three runs over five-plus innings in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers on Wednesday night.
Subbing for Ted Lilly, Samardzija gave up five hits, the most critical of which were a two-run home run by Prince Fielder and a solo shot by Jody Gerut. The 24-year-old struck out three and walked one in the loss. On the bright side, he collected his first major league hit, a solo home run to the second deck in right field in the sixth. Samardzija has a 7.53 ERA in 20 games (two starts) this season.
 Ted Lilly-S - Cubs Sep. 21 - 6:55 pm et

Ted Lilly has been scratched from his scheduled Wednesday start due to shoulder soreness.
Jeff Samardzija has been tabbed to take his place. Lilly spent close to a month on the disabled list earlier this season with a knee and shoulder injury, so the Cubs are likely to play it safe with him down the stretch. He currently holds a 3.02 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, but can't be relied on over the season's final few weeks. That said, neither can Samardzija.

 Jeff Samardzija-R - Cubs Sep. 8 - 6:38 pm et

Cubs recalled RHP Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa.
Cubs manager Lou Piniella indicated Tuesday that he wants to find Samardzija a couple of starts before the season ends. But with a 7.81 ERA in 27 2/3 major league innings this year, we'd stay far, far away. He allowed five runs on seven hits Monday evening in Iowa's season finale.
