Yankees prospect Jesus Montero will miss the rest of the year with a fractured middle finger on his left hand.
We've argued that the Yankees should have started developing Montero as a first baseman/designated hitter already. Fortunately, this isn't a major injury, but it did come while he was catching and it shows the dangers of leaving him behind the plate when it's doubtful that he'll ever be a major league-quality catcher. He should be ready to play in the Arizona Fall League if the Yankees want him to.

 Jesus Montero-C - Yankees May. 29 - 2:54 am et

Jesus Montero went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI for Single-A Tampa on Thursday.
The big game came as a designated hitter, which is no surprise. Montero is hitting .416 with seven homers in 77 at-bats as a DH this year and .265 with no homers in 83 at-bats as a catcher. Maybe the Yankees should take it as a hint, since he's not much of a catcher anyway. Montero could have All-Star potential as a designated hitter. Obviously, he's not going to play first base for the Yankees.

Yankees prospect Jesus Montero hit a pair of solo homers for Single-A Tampa on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old Montero has 20 hits in his last 11 games and is hitting .371/.421/.614 with four homers in 70 at-bats for Tampa.

Single-A Tampa's Jesus Montero went 3-for-4 with a homer Sunday, giving him nine hits in three games.
Montero is batting .395/.452/.658 through 38 at-bats. The Yankees still have their No. 1 prospect catching and have no plans to move him, though few see him staying at the position in the majors. First base is no longer an option for him in New York.

Jesus Montero hit a grand slam off Chris Bootcheck as a Yankees split-squad beat the Pirates 13-10 on Saturday.
Montero missed some time this month with a strained groin, but he's gone 6-for-9 with a couple of walks in limited action. The 19-year-old has the greatest offensive potential of any Yankees prospect. He's expected to open the season at Single-A Tampa.
