Jesse Chavez was awarded a spot in the Pirates' bullpen on Friday morning.
Chavez, 25, had a 11.45 ERA in 13 appearances this spring, but is better prepared for the start of the season than Evan Meek, who was optioned to Triple-A. "Ultimately, logic won out over emotion," GM Neal Huntington said. "Evan threw the ball very well — good velocity, good stuff, good command — and he'd gotten good results. That was tough to walk away from. But he hasn't gone back-to-back (outings) yet and hadn't gone multiple innings yet. He hasn't really faced (a tough) lineup yet. Jesse has."
