RHP Jeff Karstens and LHP Justin Thomas cleared waivers and have been outrighted to Triple-A.
Both players were out of minor league options and designated for assignment last week. Karstens, 27, was 4-6 with a 5.42 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 39 appearances (13 starts) with the Pirates in 2009. Thomas, who will turn 26 in January, posted a 4.48 ERA and an unimpressive 53/40 K/BB ratio in 60 1/3 innings at Triple-A Tacoma last season. The Pirates claimed him off waivers from the Mariners in late October.

 Jeff Karstens-S - Pirates Nov. 20 - 9:53 pm et

Pirates designated RHP Jeff Karstens for assignment.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise, however the Pirates deemed it necessary since he was out of major league options. Karstens was cleared in order to make room for Chris Jakubauskas, who was claimed from the Mariners on Friday. Karstens, 27, was 4-6 with a 5.42 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 39 appearances (13 starts) with the Pirates in 2009. Though he doesn't strike many people out, or possess great control for that matter, he should garner some interest as a spot-starter or long reliever.
 Jeff Karstens-S - Pirates Oct. 4 - 4:29 pm et

Jeff Karstens lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs in a loss to the Reds on Sunday.
Karstens gave up four hits, walked one, and struck out two. Karstens final line of the season includes a 5.42 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and a poor 52/45 K/BB in 108 innings spread over 26 relief appearances and 13 starts. He won't be a fantasy option next year, but the Pirates will continue to groom him and hope they have something. The loss means the Pirates finish at 62-99, avoiding a 100-loss season thanks to a rainout. On the plus side, the Pirates will have the second pick in the June draft.
 Kevin Hart-S - Pirates Oct. 3 - 9:46 am et

Kevin Hart will not pitch Sunday in the Pirates' season finale.
Hart has a bit of pain in his right rib cage and the Pirates don't want to risk further injury. Plus he's gone 0-5 with a 7.92 ERA in the month of September. "We wanted Kevin to get back out there and have another chance," said manager John Russell, "but there's no reason to do that with this." Jeff Karstens will fill in on three days' rest.

 Jeff Karstens-S - Pirates Sep. 30 - 11:07 pm et

Jeff Karstens improved to 4-5 by allowing two runs over five innings Wednesday night against the Cubs.
Karstens failed as a starter early on and wasn't much better in a swing role on his way to finishing with a 5.37 ERA in 105 2/3 innings. The Pirates will have better options for the rotation next year, possibly for the pen as well. Karstens' versatility and his ability to eat innings could allow him to bounce around on the fringe of the majors for a few years, but he's never likely to be much of an asset.
 Jeff Karstens-S - Pirates Sep. 27 - 1:25 am et

Jeff Karstens is scheduled to make a start in Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Cubs.
Karstens, a reliever for most of the season, worked three solid innings Friday against the Dodgers and will head into his offseason workouts as a starter. That said, he shouldn't be trusted in most fantasy leagues.
