Eugenio Velez went 3-for-5 with two steals and two runs scored Sunday against the Padres.
Finally some steals. Velez has the speed to swipe 40-50 bases per year, but his technique is lacking. He ends the year at .267/.308/.400 with 11 steals in 285 at-bats. The Giants still have high hopes that he'll turn into a legitimate leadoff hitter, but ideally, they wouldn't have him enter 2010 as a regular. He'd still get plenty of action off the bench.

Eugenio Velez singled twice and scored twice in Sunday's win over the Cubs.
Velez barely missed what likely would have been a triple in the seventh, as the ball hit the right-field wall just a foot or so foul. Thanks to Freddy Sanchez injury, Velez has already locked up second-base eligibility for 2010. It'd be a big mistake for the Giants to go into the second with him as a starter there or in the outfield, but he could be their top bench player.

Eugenio Velez was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in a win over the Dodgers on Friday night.
With the Rockies loss, the Giants are 2 1/2 games back in the Wild Card. Velez led off the game with his fifth home run of the season. He later chipped in with an RBI double to give the Giants some cushion in the sixth. Velez has cooled quite a bit from his hot-start, but he still has a productive .277/.324/.442 line to go along with five homers, 27 RBI and eight stolen bases in 224 at-bats this season. He shouldn't be a starting outfielder, but with this lineup, he'll be in there more often than not.

Eugenio Velez draws the start at second base. Sanchez hasn't done much since joining the Giants, batting .282/.297/.338 in 71 at-bats while missing a handful of games.

Giants placed second baseman Freddy Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.
Sanchez missed six consecutive games before the Giants decided to make the move. He'll be eligible to return in eight days and should be ready by then. For now, Eugenio Velez is expected to fill in at second base.

Sanchez is dealing with a sore shoulder and might not be ready to go until the weekend. Eugenio Velez is starting at second base and leading off.
