Padres acquired outfielders Aaron Cunningham and Scott Hairston from the Athletics for third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and second baseman Eric Sogard.
Hairston will probably play the bigger role this year, but the Cunningham is the bigger pickup for the Padres. San Diego has several fringe outfield candidates for the long-term, as well as Kyle Blanks, who really shouldn't be used anywhere but first. Cunningham gives them a legitimate long-term regular. He's short on star potential, but he's a fine defender in either corner and he should be a .270-15 HR guy even with Petco bringing him down. He'll likely battle Will Venable for a job this spring. |
