FOXSports.com reports that the despite the Brewers' logjam in the infield, they are unlikely to make a trade unless they are offered the pitching equivalent of Mat Gamel.
According to the report, Gamel garners more interest than Casey McGehee and Rickie Weeks with rival clubs, but as a left-handed hitter, he would help balance the Milwaukee's righty-heavy lineup. Gamel, 24, batted .242/.338/.422 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 128 at-bats for the Brewers last season. Even though he is a highly-regarded hitter, his defense is still playing catch up. Though general manager Doug Melvin would include him in the right deal, he is more likely to address the starting rotation via the free agent market.

 Casey McGehee-3B - Brewers Oct. 7 - 5:19 pm et

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that according to GM Doug Melvin and assistant Gord Ash, Casey McGehee "has taken the bull by the horns" with regard to the starting third base job in 2010.
Melvin said that moving Mat Gamel to the outfield is not likely, suggesting that Gamel could potentially be dealt for a pitcher this offseason. McGehee hit .301 with 16 homers and 66 RBI in 355 at-bats this season and should be a cheap source of infield production in next year's drafts.

 Mat Gamel-3B - Brewers Sep. 27 - 6:03 pm et

Mat Gamel smacked a three-run homer against the Phillies on Sunday but the Brewers still lost the game 6-5.
Gamel entered in the sixth to play third, then belted his home run off starter Joe Blanton in the bottom of that inning. Not surprisingly, Gamel also made an error in the contest. That the Brewers have given him just one start in September is quite curious given they're out of the race, have an opening in the lineup, and because they need to figure out where Gamel fits into their future plans defensively. Due to his slow rookie campaign and defensive questions he'll likely be undervalued next season.
 Casey McGehee-3B - Brewers Sep. 8 - 7:23 pm et

Brewers manager Ken Macha indicated Tuesday that Casey McGehee will see more playing time down the stretch than 23-year-old Mat Gamel.
McGehee, 26, is batting .295 with 13 homers and 50 RBI in 93 games this year with the Brewers. "I'm sure (Gamel) will get a couple of games," said Macha. "But it's tough to get McGehee out of there. He has done a great job." Fantasy owners may have to wait until 2010 for the "era of Mat."

Brewers recalled third baseman Mat Gamel from Triple-A Nashville.
Gamel, 23, hit .239/.336/.407 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 113 at-bats with the Brewers earlier this season. He's projected to open the 2010 season as the club's starting third baseman, so there should be a plethora of audition time made available to him over the final few weeks of '09.
