Daniel Murphy has begun working out with former Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez in an effort to improve his defense at the position.
Murphy is heading into spring training as the Mets' primary first baseman and that isn't likely to change. But he was shaky last year in the 101 games he logged at the position and who better to help him work out the kinks than a 16-time Gold Glove winner? Murphy, 24, also caught fire offensively near the end of last season and is hoping to improve his numbers at the plate.

Daniel Murphy doubled and tripled to drive in a pair of runs against the Nationals on Sunday.
Murphy's first full campaign can only be described as a disappointment. However, he is helping his case to maintain a large role next year by batting .292 with 18 doubles, three triples, and four homers since the start of August. If you're looking for some last minute help in average or RBI then consider adding Murphy.

Daniel Murphy was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in loss to the Braves on Thursday night.
Murphy now has 10 home runs and 56 RBI in 461 at-bats this season. With a .248 batting average at the All-Star break, Murphy has pulled his overall line up to .262/.312/.414, but he has done it at the detriment of his on-base percentage. Murphy has walked just four times since the start of August. With his adventures on defense, Murphy may find himself without a starting job in 2010.

Daniel Murphy went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI Sunday against the Cubs.
Murphy drove in all of the Mets' run while finishing a double shy of the cycle. The homer was his ninth and the triple his third. He also committed his 12th error, but he certainly more than made up for it.

Daniel Murphy was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in a win over the Rockies on Tuesday night.
Murphy has hits in each of his last five games -- four of them out of the cleanup spot in Jerry Manuel's lineup. Murphy is now batting .248 -- believe it or not, his batting average hasn't been this high since the end of June.

Daniel Murphy was on the bench in favor of Nick Evans in a third straight game Friday.
What's remarkable is that the Mets waited until Murphy started to hit and then benched him. He was 10-for-30 in the games leading up to the benching. He homered Monday, went 0-for-4 as the Mets were shut out Tuesday and has taken a seat ever since.
