Joe Mather underwent surgery Tuesday on his left wrist.
Mather is likely to miss the rest of the season. He had been hitting just .176 with a home run and nine extra-base hits in 136 at-bats for Triple-A Memphis. A big push of the "reset" button seems in order.

Cardinals optioned infielder-outfielder Joe Mather to Triple-A Memphis.
This is a surprise. It had become clear that David Freese was going to beat out Mather for the starting job at third base, but Mather still made sense for a bench that is now set to include Brendan Ryan, Brian Barden and Joe Thurston. Actually, we'd take Brian Barton over Mather, but he was sent down weeks ago. Barring a late acquisition, the Cardinals' only significant power threat off the bench will be either Colby Rasmus or Chris Duncan, whoever isn't starting.

Joe Mather is in danger of losing his grip on the third base job filling in for the rehabbing Troy Glaus, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Mather is in a 1-for-24 funk, after leading the Grapefruit League in RBI just two weeks ago. He last started at third base on March 18 and is being increasingly looked at as a third baseman-outfielder. If Mather can't get it together with the bat, it would be hard to give him a lot of time, especially with his questionable glove. That said, any internal options will simply keep the hot corner warm until Glaus returns. David Freese is expected to get the start at third on Wednesday.

 David Freese-3B - Cardinals Mar. 20 - 7:25 pm et

David Freese has reportedly re-entered the race to hold down the Cardinals third base job until Troy Glaus' return.
Freese had been reassigned to minor league camp two weeks ago due to a lingering Achilles tendon injury, but Joe Mather's recent slump is leading to another chance. Freese is regaining full health and may draw the start at third base Saturday against the Nats. Brendan Ryan, Tyler Greene, Brian Barden, and Joe Thurston are also in consideration.

Joe Mather went 0-for-5 on Thursday and is hitless in his last 19 at-bats.
Mather, who was leading the Grapefruit League in RBI a week ago, is down to .196/.211/.353 for the spring. He was all set to act as the replacement for Troy Glaus at third base at the beginning of the season, but if his bat stays cold, then there's little chance of him getting the job. He's easily the weakest defender of the current options.

Joe Mather homered off Marcus McBeth in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cardinals a 4-2 win over the Red Sox.
Todd Wellemeyer specifically and perhaps the Cardinals pitching staff as a whole are starting to get antsy about the proposed infield that features Mather at third and Skip Schumaker at second. Still, it looks like the team is leaning towards going in that direction. Mather, at least, would play a less difficult position and would only be asked to start for a month or so while Troy Glaus is out. He's hit .313/.316/.563 with a Grapefruit League-leading 13 RBI this spring.
