RHP Jeff Karstens and LHP Justin Thomas cleared waivers and have been outrighted to Triple-A.
Both players were out of minor league options and designated for assignment last week. Karstens, 27, was 4-6 with a 5.42 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 39 appearances (13 starts) with the Pirates in 2009. Thomas, who will turn 26 in January, posted a 4.48 ERA and an unimpressive 53/40 K/BB ratio in 60 1/3 innings at Triple-A Tacoma last season. The Pirates claimed him off waivers from the Mariners in late October. |
