Marlins signed infielder Danny Richar to a minor league contract.
Richar hit .290/.330/.438 in 181 plate appearances with Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate this past season before undergoing surgery on his left shoulder in late July to repair a torn labrum. Richar's odds of making the Marlins out of spring training will increase if the club unloads incumbent second baseman Dan Uggla. Otherwise, he's simply organizational depth.

Richar underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in late July. He's expected to be at full strength by the starting of spring training.

Dr. Tim Kremchek performed the procedure. Richar tore the labrum in his shoulder sliding into home plate on July 2. He is expected to be ready for Spring Training in 2010.

Richar hurt himself Wednesday sliding into home and had to be pinch-hit for on Thursday because he was too sore to swing a bat. If he cannot go, they may recall the rehabbing Edwin Encarnacion from Triple-A Louisville a little early.
