Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said 2009 second overall pick Dustin Ackley will start working out at second base.
"We are not etching this into stone to say this guy will be the second baseman of the future," Zduriencik said. "It's just something we do." Ackley's work at second base should give Zduriencik a better indication of what to do personnel-wise going forward, since the 21-year-old is expected to arrive in the majors rather quickly. Ackley was an outfielder and first baseman with North Carolina, and has played center field during his pro debut in the Arizona Fall League.

2009 second overall pick Dustin Ackley went 2-for-4 in his debut for the Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League on Wednesday.
Ackley played first base for North Carolina this year as he continued his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he started in center field in his pro debut. That is expected to be his long-term position as he quickly makes his way through the Seattle farm system.

According to SI's Jon Heyman, the Mariners and second overall pick Dustin Ackley have come to terms on a major league deal worth $9.5 million.
If it's a Boras client and Heyman is reporting, you know it's accurate. The Mariners went awfully far to land Ackley, even though he didn't seem to be in the same kind of bargaining position as Stephen Strasburg. He was the top position player available in this year's draft, but that probably wouldn't have been case in 2010.
 Dustin Ackley-1B - Mariners Jun. 9 - 6:23 pm et

Mariners chose North Carolina first baseman-outfielder Dustin Ackley with the second pick in the draft.
Ackley, a 6-foot-1, 184-pound left-handed hitter, has been a first baseman since undergoing Tommy John surgery, but the Mariners are drafting him as an outfielder and will stick him in center. He has the speed to last there, and he should be able to hit for average. He may not develop into more than a 12- or 15-homer guy, but he could contribute as soon as 2011.
