After speaking with manager Jim Leyland, GM Dave Dombrowski said that Phil Coke is more likely to be a reliever with the club.
Dombrowski had said earlier that Coke would have a chance to compete for a rotation spot, something Leyland immediately nixed. The fifth starter will be drawn from a pool of Armando Galarraga, Nate Robertson, Eddie Bonine and Dontrelle Willis.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said Tuesday the newcomer Phil Coke "will have a chance to compete" for a spot in the club's starting rotation.
Coke did not make a start during his two-year tenure with the Yankees but he did often during his first few seasons in the minors. The Tigers have plenty of left-handed relievers -- Bobby Seay, Fu-Te Ni, Nate Robertson and Daniel Schlereth -- and could use the variety in their starting rotation. The 27-year-old Coke had a 4.50 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 60 innings last season.

According to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press, left-hander Phil Coke may land in the Tigers' 2010 starting rotation.
Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski is a big fan of having a few left-handers in his starting rotation, and Coke certainly seems to be on board with the idea. "I may be labeled as a reliever," Coke said, "but I'm just as capable as a starter. If you want me to go nine innings, cool, no problem." The 27-year-old had a 4.50 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 60 innings this past season.

Tigers acquired LHPs Phil Coke and Daniel Schlereth, OF Austin Jackson and RHP Max Scherzer; Diamondbacks acquired RHPs Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson; Yankees acquired OF Curtis Granderson.
Coke, a 27-year-old southpaw, posted a 4.50 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 72 appearances out of the Yanks' pen in '09. His major malfunction? The gopher ball. Coke allowed 10 home runs -- or 1.50 HR/9 -- in 60 innings pitched. Still, he boasts a quality fastball-slider combination that could have him headed for the rotation before long.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday evening that Phil Coke will need another day or two to recover from his stomach virus.
Coke came down with acute gastritis on Monday afternoon, a result of something he ate. He has a 1.09 WHIP and 43/19 K/BB in 56 innings this season and will play a major role in the playoffs.
