Wladimir Balentien was used as a defensive replacement Monday in his first action in four days.
Balentien has been troubled by a finger injury. What little fantasy value he had would seem to be pretty much gone now with Jay Bruce back.

Wladimir Balentien was scratched from Friday's series opener against the Cubs with an undisclosed injury.
Darnell McDonald is filling in out in right field. Balentien, acquired from the Mariners in late July, is batting .261/.363/.420 with six doubles, two homers and 14 RBI through 88 at-bats with his new team.

Yankees acquired infielder-outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Reds for catcher Chase Weems.
The Reds had to get rid of Hairston just so that Dusty Baker would stop playing him. His versatility should make him pretty useful to the Yankees as one of the last players on the bench, but he was hurting the Reds while hitting .254/.305/.397 in 307 at-bats. The Yankees figure to give him Cody Ransom's spot and let him serve as the top backup at three infield positions and in center until Brett Gardner returns. His departure should free up playing time for Wladimir Balentien in Cincinnati.

Reds acquired outfielder Wladimir Balentien from the Mariners for RHP Robert Manuel.
Balentien certainly has some power potential (12 homers in 401 career major league at-bats), but he also has a miserable 619 OPS and 122/29 K/BB ratio in his brief big league career. He's likely to fill a reserve role for the Reds initially and should only have value in deeper NL-only leagues.

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse reports that the Reds have acquired outfielder Wladimir Balentien from the Mariners in exchange for RHP Robert Manuel.
The Cincinnati outfield is somewhat depleted at the moment, so there's no harm in taking a shot on Balentien despite some very evident flaws in his approach at the plate. The 26-year-old Manuel had a 2.70 ERA in 46 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season and has pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Reds this month. He could be a useful asset in the Seattle bullpen.

Mariners designate outfielder Wladimir Balentien for assignment.
This is quite a signal sent by a team who once viewed Balentien as a future staple of their outfield. But with just 12 home runs and a 30 percent strikeout rate in 401 major league at-bats, the Mariners were clearly unhappy with his progress. Remember that he is just 25 years old, with plus-power, so he'll find a new home before long.
