Mariners signed RHP Felix Hernandez to a five-year, $78 million extension.
The deal includes a $3.5 million signing bonus that will push his 2010 salary up to $10 million. It's a great all around deal for the M's, who now have a proven ace locked up through 2014 at a bargain rate. Hernandez, 23, posted a 2.49 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a career-high 19 wins last year. He will head a much-improved Seattle pitching staff this season that now includes Cliff Lee.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that as part of his new five-year, $78 million extension with the Mariners, Felix Hernandez will receive a $3.5 million signing bonus.
He'll make an annual salary just south of $16 million, but Heyman reports that he will make $20 million in the final year of the contract in 2014. King Felix turns 24 years old in April, so he won't even be 30 years old before he goes out in search of a new contract.

Jon Heyman of SI.com has confirmed that the Mariners and Felix Hernandez have reached agreement on a five-year extension worth $78 million.
Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia first had the correct length and salary. Some incentives are also involved, but as of now it appears to be another superbly crafted deal by Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik. Hernandez, 23, posted a 2.49 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a career-high 19 wins last season and will pitch for the M's for the next five years at a bargain rate.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com hears that Felix Hernandez's new contract extension is "in the neighborhood of 5 years and $80 million."
And Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia is hearing that the deal is worth $78 million. If both reporters are correct, or even close to being correct, it appears to be a fantastic deal for the Mariners. They'll have their ace at a bargain rate through 2014 and he'll still be able to hit the free agent market again at the age of 28. Score another one for GM Jack Zduriencik.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that Felix Hernandez's new contract with the Mariners will extend over five years.
ESPN.com's Keith Law first had news of the extension early Tuesday morning, but the money involved is still under wraps. Hernandez, 23, posted a 2.49 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a career-high 19 wins this past season for the Mariners. He's expected to land close to $100 million.

ESPN.com's Keith Law reports that Felix Hernandez and the Mariners have agreed to a multi-year contract.
No word yet on the years or money involved, but Hernandez is under team control as an arbitration-eligible player through 2011. He earned $3.8 million last season and would be in line for a big raise after going 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA as a 23-year-old to finish second in the AL Cy Young balloting behind Zack Greinke. Financial details should be forthcoming.
