 Merkin Valdez-R- GiantsMay. 6 - 9:23 am et
Merkin Valdez has emerged as the primary setup man in San Francisco.
The Giants forked over close to $11 million for relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Bobby Howry this offseason, but Valdez has been the most reliable man in the 'pen. "Merkin, the way he's throwing, he's going to be helping to set up," manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday night.

 Bob Howry-R - Giants Dec. 3 - 4:07 pm et

Giants signed RHP Bob Howry, who had been with the Cubs, to a one-year, $2.75 million contract.
Howry can earn up to $4.25 million, but that would involve him taking over the closer's role from Brian Wilson pretty early in the season. If he makes 75 appearances, which he's done three of the last four years, he'll earn $3.25 million. It's another nice relief signing for the Giants. Howry had a 5.32 ERA last season, but he was right around 3.00 each of the previous four years and he's been extremely durable since returning from elbow surgery in 2004. He should be a fine setup man.

The Giants' pursuit of Bob Howry has accelerated since the Cubs' failure to offer him arbitration on Monday.
Howry to the Giants has been talked about for weeks, and a deal could be close now. He could get the same kind of contract that Jeremy Affeldt did (two years, $8 million) and join Affeldt in a setup role in front of Brian Wilson.

 Kerry Wood-R - Indians Dec. 1 - 9:24 pm et

The Cubs have declined to offer arbitration to Kerry Wood and Bob Howry.
Wood, a Type A free agent, just became a whole lot more attractive. The Cubs know he'll get multiyear offers elsewhere, but they figured he might prefer Chicago so much that he'd take the one-year deal to stay. Oddly, it's not something they wanted to risk, though if you asked us a couple of months ago, we'd have guessed they'd be thrilled to have Wood back on a one-year deal.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Cubs are unlikely to offer Bob Howry arbitration by Monday night's deadline.
Howry struggled in 2008, but will be an attractive relief option for many teams once signing him doesn't involve losing a draft pick.
