General manager Theo Epstein said the Red Sox won't rush Daniel Bard into the closer role.
"I think he has the physical ability to do that and I think we saw as he developed over the course of the year he has the mental make-up to do that as well," said Epstein. "...This is somebody who is still really a work in progress and while he may have the ability to do something it might not be the best thing for the long-term and his career if we force him into something." The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 3.65 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 63/22 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings in his rookie season. Jonathan Papelbon certainly showed some warning signs in 2009, capped by his miserable performance in Game 3 of the ALDS, however if it is unclear whether the Red Sox will explore trading him.

 Jonathan Papelbon-R - Red Sox Sep. 16 - 4:22 pm et

Jonathan Papelbon will not be available Wednesday due to tightness in his lower back.
He first suffered the injury while slipping in the bullpen Tuesday night, but doesn't anticipate being sidelined long. "This is just a one-day thing," he said. "I’ll be back out there tomorrow. If we were tied (in the playoff race), I’d be out there." Daniel Bard could get a save chance on Wednesday.

 Jonathan Papelbon-R - Red Sox Sep. 2 - 2:20 pm et

Jonathan Papelbon is unlikely to be available on Wednesday after throwing 28 pitches during a two-inning save Tuesday night.
Billy Wagner (who pitched a scoreless inning in that game as well) is also not expected to pitch, meaning that Daniel Bard could get a chance to close should a save opportunity arise Wednesday night.

 Jonathan Papelbon-R - Red Sox Aug. 12 - 5:05 pm et

Jonathan Papelbon is likely unavailable on Wednesday after pitching 2 1/3 innings the past two days.
No word on who would close in Papelbon's absence, but a close game could mean a save opportunity for Daniel Bard or Takashi Saito on Wednesday.

Daniel Bard gave up back-to-back homers in the eighth to take a blown save and a loss Sunday against the Yankees.
That's twice during the six-game losing streak that he's blown eighth-inning leads. The bizarre thing is that he was handed the role in the first place. Bard is going to be a great reliever, but Hideki Okajima has been maybe the game's best eighth-inning guy since entering the league in 2007. Manager Terry Francona tried to fix something that wasn't even a little bit broken.
 Daniel Bard-R - Red Sox May. 10 - 7:05 pm et

Red Sox purchased the contract of RHP Daniel Bard from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Bard, who possesses one of the best pure fastballs in baseball, had a 1.13 ERA and a 29/5 K/BB ratio in 16 innings for Pawtucket. He lacks a second above average pitch, but with the way his command has improved, he could be a quality major league reliever anyway.
