Michael Bowden was knocked around for seven runs on seven hits over three innings in his first big-league start of the 2009 season on Monday night.
Bowden had posted a 7.84 ERA over six relief appearances for the Red Sox this season and looked no better tonight than those numbers would suggest. He struck out three and issued only one walk but yielded seven hits and four of them went for extra bases. He might get another start but clearly should be avoided.

Josh Beckett (mild back spasms) has been scratched from Monday's start against the Blue Jays.
Michael Bowden will step in. The surprising change was made last minute. It is not yet known if Beckett will make another start in the regular season. Beckett has pitched a career-high 207 1/3 innings this year and manager Terry Francona might just prefer to have him rest until the playoffs start.

The 22-year old offers long relief depth behind Tim Wakefield, as Junichi Tazawa had to bail out (in the loosest of terms) Paul Byrd Friday night.

Red Sox optioned RHP Michael Bowden to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Bowden was brought up before Friday's game against the Yankees and swiftly allowed seven earned runs on eight hits out of the bullpen. The 22-year-old right-hander could return once rosters expand (on September 1), but isn't likely to carry any fantasy value the rest of the way.

Red Sox recalled RHP Michael Bowden from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Bowden comes up to provide the Sox with a fresh arm in their three-game affair with the Yankees. He might head right back down if he's needed to pitch several innings in one of the games. With Tim Wakefield, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Paul Byrd all close to being part of the rotation, Bowden offers no fantasy value for the remainder of the year.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have recalled RHP Michael Bowden from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Bowden had a cup of coffee earlier in the year when he pitched two perfect innings of relief against the Yankees. He's been starting the entire year in Pawtucket since and has seen his stock dip over the last couple months. He'll be available out of the bullpen. The corresponding move is not yet known, but Jason Varitek could be headed to the disabled list.
