Giants released outfielder Dave Roberts.
San Francisco opted to eat his $6.5 million salary rather than keep Roberts around as a fifth outfielder. While the deal was overshadowed by the more horrific Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews Jr. signings of two years ago, Roberts still proved to be a big waste of money for the Giants. He'll have to catch on as a fifth outfielder elsewhere. Eugenio Velez would seem to be the big beneficiary here, as he can pick up the outfield time that would have gone to Roberts.
