According to Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston, Doug Brocail has decided to retire.
"I am retiring because it's harder to get my arm in shape and the talent just isn't there anymore," Brocail said. "There's no use in just hanging on." The 42-year-old right-hander posted a 4.58 ERA and 9/13 K/BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings in '09, but missed most of the season with hamstring and shoulder injuries. Brocail retires with a 4.00 ERA in 15 major league seasons.

 Jose Valverde-R - Tigers Dec. 1 - 3:58 pm et

The Astros have offered arbitration to right-hander Jose Valverde, but not shortstop Miguel Tejada or right-handers LaTroy Hawkins or Doug Brocail.
It shouldn't hurt to offer Valverde (a Type A) arbitration, as he should catch on elsewhere. The Astros are believed to have an offer on the table for Hawkins (Type B) to return, so it's possible they iron out a new deal, however he should have a few more suitors now that he won't cost a draft pick. Tejada (Type A) could find a move to third base in his future.

 Doug Brocail-R - Astros Oct. 30 - 2:58 pm et

Astros declined RHP Doug Brocail's $2.85 million option for 2010.
Houston will give him a $250,000 buyout instead, making the 42-year-old right-hander a free agent. Brocail was very effective in 2008, but missed most of this season with hamstring and shoulder injuries, posting a 4.58 ERA and 9/13 K/BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings. He should be able to land a middle relief gig somewhere, but may opt for retirement rather than a minor league deal.
 Doug Brocail-R - Astros Sep. 29 - 1:20 pm et

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports that Doug Brocail is undecided about his future.
Brocail, 42, says an MRI on his right shoulder should provide some clarity. "It all depends what the MRI says at the end of the season," said Brocail. "I've had a good run of luck lately, but health is the main concern. If I'm healthy, I'd like to play again. If not, I'll see." Brocail has missed nearly two-thirds of the season with various maladies, ranging from a sprained right shoulder to a left hamstring strain. He has a 2.70 ERA and 9/13 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings this season. Regardless of a comeback, it's unlikely the Astros will pick up his $2.85 million for 2010.

 Doug Brocail-R - Astros Sep. 1 - 1:29 pm et

Astros activated RHP Doug Brocail from the 15-day disabled list.
Brocail has been sidelined since August 7 due to a right shoulder strain, his second trip to the disabled list this season. It's been a lost year for the 42-year-old, as he has a 5.40 ERA in just 8 1/3 innings this season.
 Doug Brocail-R - Astros Aug. 20 - 9:03 pm et

Doug Brocail (shoulder) threw a successful simulated game Thursday and is aiming to begin a rehab assignment next week.
Brocail has been sidelined since August 7 with a right shoulder strain and is hoping to return in early September. "I felt really good," the veteran reliever said after Thursday's short workout. "I think I gave up a bomb and a couple of hits, but I felt good. I can't complain one bit."
