The Rockies have sent the rights to OF Matt Murton to the Hashin Tigers.
Murton's departure will allow Ryan Spilbroghs to find playing time in the Rockies' outfield next season. Murton, 28, hit .250/.304/.404 this past season with one homer and six RBI in 52 at-bats. He should do well in Japan.

Rockies released outfielder Matt Murton.
This appears to be a pure act of goodwill by the Rockies. If the club had traded Ryan Spilborghs, Murton appeared to be an obvious choice as the backup right-handed-batting outfielder. Murton's desire to make more money in Japan, however, might have swayed the organization into letting him walk.

Rockies purchased the contract of outfielder Matt Murton from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Murton was designated for assignment by the Rox in late August, but the move came off as odd. He has a 267/.327/.444 batting line in 45 at-bats this season and is a fine utility outfielder.

Rockies designated outfielder Matt Murton for assignment.
It was a short stint with the Rockies for Murton. He was promoted on Tuesday but jettisoned the next day to make room for Juan Rincon. Murton, a former top prospect who is now 27, hit .267/.327/.444 in 45 at-bats for the Rockies earlier this season. He was raking at Triple-A Colorado Springs, producing a .321 average with 10 homers and 71 RBI. He'll return there if he clears waivers.

Murton wasn't terrible, batting .267/.327/.444 in 45 at-bats for the Rockies, but upper management felt it was time for top prospect Carlos Gonzalez to join the big club. Murton will be recalled if there's a need for depth in the Colorado outfield.
