The Nationals have spoken with the agent for John Smoltz recently, but aren't willing to break the bank to sign him, reports Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
They currently have a similar stance with free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson. Smoltz, 42, has also been linked to the Mets in recent weeks. With Jason Marquis under contract and a host of young starters in the pipeline, the Nationals are prepared to go with internal options, for better or worse.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Mets have "fallen behind" on free agent right-hander John Smoltz.
This suggests than another team has jumped to the forefront, but Heyman doesn't note who that might be. The Mets need another starter badly, but according to recent reports they have yet to actually tender him a contract offer. Manager Jerry Manuel may be forced to hope he can "get away with" Fernando Nieve as his fifth starter.

A source tells Adam Rubin of the Daily News that free agent right-hander John Smoltz could wait until mid-season before signing with a new team.
Not only would it provide the 42-year-old with a better opportunity to be at full strength late in the regular season, but it would also allow him to sign with a contender. The Mets have maintained interest in Smoltz to be their No. 5 starter, however they have yet to formally make him an offer to come to Queens.

Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record believes that free agent John Smoltz is leaning toward returning to the Cardinals.
The Mets have expressed a good amount of interest in Smoltz lately but the 42-year-old may not want to pick up and move to the East Coast. He had a 4.26 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 40/9 K/BB ratio in seven starts with the Cardinals down the stretch last season and seemed comfortable with St. Louis management. If the Mets are unable to land him or any other starter, they'll likely go with Fernando Nieve as their No. 5 arm.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that after losing out on Ben Sheets the Mets' next target "looks to be" free agent right-hander John Smoltz.
Destinations of the remaining free agent pitchers should become much clearer with Sheets off the market. The Mets' interest in Smoltz has been well documented this winter, but interestingly Rosenthal notes that the club has not been aggressive with free agent right-hander Jon Garland. Chances are Smoltz will cost less than Garland, but there's no promise he can provide the number of innings the Mets seek for a middle-of-the-rotation type.

The Mets continue to have an active dialogue with free agent John Smoltz, according to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News.
The Mets evidently view Smoltz as a starter and he would certainly fit the bill as a back-end option in the rotation. Smoltz, who turns 43 in May, found some success with a switch back to the National League late last season, posting a 4.26 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 40/9 K/BB ratio in seven starts with the Cardinals down the stretch. Ben Sheets and Jon Garland are two other rotation options for the Mets, according to Rubin.
