David Ortiz is working hard on his fitness level this offseason in the hopes of avoiding another slow start.
Ortiz hit just .222/.317/.416 before the All-Star break this past season and didn't have a home run until late May. Boston GM Terry Francona checked in on him this week and was impressed. "He looks good. He's following through with a really good start to his offseason," said Epstein. He's lost some weight and he's in really good shape, so that's a good sign."

During an appearance to promote an upcoming charity event, David Ortiz said the Red Sox need another power bat.
"I say that like a year ago and everybody looked at me like I was a (expletive) clown. I say, ‘We need another 30 home run hitting guy.’ ‘What, you crazy!’ Everybody talking trash. Now what?" Ortiz said. "Everybody will always welcome a 30 home run hitting player. Every time, every situation. You want to compete with those guys across the street you better bring it, period." General manager Theo Epstein will attempt to re-sign Jason Bay, but are also expected to pursue Adrian Gonzalez to play first base.

David Ortiz managed his first hit of the ALDS in his final at-bat Sunday to finish the series 1-for-12.
Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay and Ortiz combined for three hits while making up the fourth-through-sixth spots in the lineup in the series. Ortiz finished the regular season hot, but he was brutal against the Angels, striking out four times and never hitting a ball particularly hard. Had the Red Sox held on to win today, it would have made sense to bench him against Joe Saunders and give Jason Varitek a start behind the plate on Monday.

Dvid Ortiz is not in the lineup for Friday's affair with Cleveland.
Ortiz is sitting against left-hander Jeremy Sowers as a normal day off. However, don't be surprised to see him make a pinch-hit appearance: he's two home runs from 30 and three RBI from 100: goals both he and the Sox would love to see him get. Mike Lowell moves from the hot corner to the DH.

The Red Sox are resting the majority of their regulars on Wednesday, one night after clinching a spot in the postseason.
David Ortiz is starting, but he doesn't have much in the way of a lineup around him. Kevin Youkilis, Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Bay and Dustin Pedroia are all getting the night off. That's bad news for Time Wakefield and good news for the starting pitcher Toronto is sending to the hill -- some guy named Roy Halladay.

David Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in a win over the Royals on Wednesday night.
Ortiz had an RBI single in the fifth and connected for a three-run blast in the ninth. Despite a .234 batting average and 777 OPS, he now has 25 home runs and 88 RBI this season. Ortiz is batting .266 with three home runs and 10 RBI this month.
