Denny Hamlin was one of six drivers involved in a grinding Turn 1 accident that ended the first practice after little more than 20 minutes.
Hamlin, who two weeks ago tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee playing pickup basketball, had his No. 11 Toyota outside Mark Martin's No. 5 Chevrolet when Martin moved over, made contact with Hamlin's car and ignited the swirling melee. When the dust cleared Hamlin, Martin, Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray and Clint Bowyer (testing the No. 29 Chevrolet for teammate Kevin Harvick, who was ill with the flu at home and planning to travel to Daytona Thursday evening) had to go to backup cars. -NASCAR.com

This weekend will mark Denny Hamlin's fifth start in the prestigious pre-season Bud Shootout at Daytona International Speedway and he can hold his head knowing that he’s one of a select few in the field to have a win in this race to his credit.
Hamlin made his first start, and collected his first win, in the Budweiser Shootout in February of 2006. He had only seven career Cup starts to his name as he prepared to embark on a record-setting rookie season that would start with the 2006 Daytona 500. Not only did Hamlin and the #11 FedEx team show up for the race, they showed what they could do as Hamlin parlayed a great car, great drive and some well-timed help into a first win behind the wheel of a Cup car and the first ever Shootout win by a Cup rookie.

Denny Hamlin, widely considered the top challenger to Jimmie Johnson for the 2010 Sprint Cup Series championship, plans to drive this season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Hamlin tore the ACL while playing basketball on Friday, a team spokesman confirmed. The plans are for Hamlin to be in the car at Daytona and throughout the 2010 campaign, and then have surgery to repair the ligament after the season. Immediate surgery is not an option because of the lengthy recovery time.- NASCAR.com

This weekend will mark Denny Hamlin's ninth start at Phoenix International Raceway and his 150th career start at the Cup level.
Despite not having a win at PIR, Hamlin and the #11 team have performed very well, posting three top-three finishes to date. Earlier this season, the #11 team rolled the dice on Saturday night at PIR, using pit road strategy to score an impressive sixth-place finish in the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Last fall, Hamlin continued a string of good runs at PIR – a self-proclaimed favorite track – by posting a fifth-place finish. Hamlin made his debut at PIR in the fall of 2005 in only his sixth career Cup start and secured his first career pole before finishing 13th on the night.
